HOUSE BILL 239

AN ACT prohibiting the disclosure of certain information by a public utility.

ANALYSIS

This bill prohibits a public utility from releasing confidential customer information without written authorization from the customer, unless otherwise required by law.

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Three

AN ACT prohibiting the disclosure of certain information by a public utility.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

1 New Subdivision; Customer Privacy. Amend RSA 374 by inserting after section 60 the following new subdivision:

Customer Privacy

374:61 Customer Privacy.

I. No public utility shall release confidential customer information without written authorization from the customer, unless otherwise required by law.

II. Confidential customer information shall include but not be limited to:

(a) Customer name, address, and telephone number.

(b) Customer usage data.

(c) Customer payment information.

2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect January 1, 2004.
