AN ACT relative to emergency powers of the supreme court.

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Three
AN ACT relative to emergency powers of the supreme court.
Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:
1 New Section; Emergency Powers of the Supreme Court. Amend RSA 490 by inserting after section 6 the following new section:
490:6-a Emergency Powers. The chief justice of the supreme court shall have the power, upon the request of the governor, attorney general or the chief judge of any court, or sua sponte, in the event of natural disaster, civil disobedience, or other emergency situation requiring the closure of courts or other circumstances inhibiting the ability of litigants to comply with deadlines imposed by rules of procedure applicable in the courts of this state, to enter such order or orders as may be appropriate to suspend, toll, or otherwise grant relief from time deadlines imposed by otherwise applicable statutes and rules of procedure for such period as may be appropriate, including, without limitation, those affecting speedy trial procedures in criminal and juvenile proceedings, all civil process and proceedings, and all appellate time limitations.
2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect January 1, 2004.
