STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Eight
A RESOLUTION urging the United States Department of Defense to restore the designations of Prisoner of War and Missing in Action to those servicemen and servicewomen who are missing in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Whereas, the citizens of New Hampshire have had a strong tradition of supporting all servicemen and servicewomen who are prisoners of war or are missing in action; and
Whereas, the United States of America is not currently at war with the nations of Afghanistan or Iraq; and
Whereas, the United States Department of Defense has chosen not to designate those servicemen and servicewomen who go missing in operations in Afghanistan or Iraq as Prisoners of War or Missing in Action, instead using terms including, “Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown” and “Missing-Captured;” and
Whereas, those servicemen and servicewomen engaged in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq are participants in the larger war on terrorism, showing a incomparable level of valor and duty to the United States of America; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the New Hampshire general court hereby urges the United States Department of Defense to restore the designation of Prisoner of War and Missing in Action to those servicemen and servicewomen who are missing in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq; and
That copies of this resolution be sent by the senate clerk to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Secretary of the United States Department of Defense and to each member of the New Hampshire congressional delegation.
Effective: April 16, 2008
