AN ACT relative to excuse from jury service.

This bill allows the court to excuse a person from jury service if he or she has legal custody of a young child who would lack adequate supervision if such person served on the jury.

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Ten
AN ACT relative to excuse from jury service.
Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:
1 Excuse From Jury Service. Amend RSA 500-A:11 to read as follows:
500-A:11 Excuse From Jury Service.
I. A person who is not disqualified for jury service may be excused from jury service by the court only upon a showing of undue hardship, extreme inconvenience, public necessity, or for any other cause that the court deems appropriate. The person may be excused for the time deemed necessary by the court and shall report again for jury service, as directed by the court.
II. For purposes of paragraph I, “undue hardship” includes a situation in which jury service requires a person who has legal custody of a child under 13 years of age to leave the child without adequate supervision.
2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect January 1, 2011.
