STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Ten
A RESOLUTION congratulating the Boy Scouts of America on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
Whereas, in 1907, Scouting was created by Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the hero of Mafeking, with 22 Scouts at Brownsea Island in Dorset, England; and
Whereas, in 1909 Chicago businessman William D. Boyce became lost in the London fog and was assisted by an unknown Scout who helped him find his way, embodying the Scout slogan of “do a good turn daily;” and
Whereas, being moved by this selfless act, Boyce returned to the United States and incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910, which then became chartered by Congress on June 15, 1916; and
Whereas, the Boy Scouts of America’s mission statement is “to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law;” and
Whereas, in 1930, seeing a need to provide greater services to more youth at an earlier age, Cub Scouting began and by the early 1960s, fully half of all American boys were Cub Scouts; and
Whereas, Scouts from all walks of life have lived their life by the Scout motto of “Be Prepared” and gone on to notable careers in public service, the space program, the military, journalism, diplomacy, athletics, entertainment, and entrepreneurship; and
Whereas, in 1998, seeing the need for greater emphasis on outdoor, high adventure activities, Venturing was created and has been successful in its efforts to promote leadership qualities amongst young men and women; and
Whereas, there are currently over 1.6 million Cub Scouts, 2.5 million Boy Scouts, 200,000 Venturers, and 1.6 million adult volunteers taking part in the Scouting program; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the general court of the state of New Hampshire extends its heartfelt support and congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America on the occasion of its 100th Anniversary; and
That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the senate clerk to the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America in Irving, Texas; to the Daniel Webster Council, Boy Scouts of America in Manchester, New Hampshire; and to the Yankee Clipper Council, Boy Scouts of America in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
