STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Fifteen
A RESOLUTION commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Social Security Act of 1965.
Whereas, on July 30, 2015, the United States will mark the 50th anniversary of the Social Security Act of 1965, Public Law 89-97; and
Whereas, President Lyndon B. Johnson sighed the bill into law on July 30, 1965; and
Whereas, the act created the country’s first national health insurance programs, Medicare and Medicaid; and
Whereas, Medicare guarantees affordable health insurance to all Americans aged 65 or older, as well as younger persons with severe disabilities; and
Whereas, Medicaid provides matching funds to states for programs serving the poor and disabled; and
Whereas, on March 26, 2014, Governor Margaret Wood Hassan signed SB 413, “An act relative to access to health insurance coverage,” which uses federal Medicaid funds to guarantee health care for all New Hampshire residents with incomes up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the New Hampshire house of representatives hereby recognizes the importance of access to affordable healthcare for all citizens on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid; and
That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the house clerk to the Director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the members of the New Hampshire congressional delegation, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Majority and Minority leaders of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate.
