Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened: 1 Restoration and Repair; Pre-1981 Vehicles. Amend RSA 262:7 to read as follows: 262:7 Changed or Removed Vehicle Identification Number. I. Any person who buys, receives, possesses, sells or disposes of a motor vehicle or an engine for a motor vehicle, knowing that a vehicle identification number of said motor vehicle or engine has been removed, defaced, obliterated, or changed shall be guilty of a misdemeanor; provided, however, if upon discovery by any person that a vehicle identification number has been removed, defaced, obliterated, or changed, he shall report the same to the nearest police station and shall not be charged with a violation of this section. II. This section does not apply to a person who removes and reinstalls a manufacturer's serial or identification number on a vehicle whose model year is 1981 or earlier, if the removal and reinstallation are reasonably necessary for repair or restoration, unless the person knows or has reason to know that the motor vehicle is stolen. 2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect 60 days after its passage.
